Helpful Hints On Teaching Your Kids About The Environment
The easiest way to teach your children about the environment is through participation. Allow your children to help with activities at home that relate to environment. Children often learn best through doing and example. While living your daily life and doing your environmental part allow your children to help and explain the task at hand and what its impact on the environment may be. Recycling is the first step in teaching your children about the environment. Have your children recycle their own garbage. Show them where you put paper, plastic, glass, and metal. Explain the importance of reusing and recycling on our natural resources. You can even arrange a trip to the local recycling facility with your child and their friends or classmates. Plant a new tree in your yard. Not only is this an exciting project for your child because they like watching things grow and getting their hands dirty. It also is an excellent opportunity for you to explain why trees are important and the effect that planting trees has on the environment. Let your child pick the tree and help select the planting location, this will get them more interested and involved. Walk with your child to school rather than drive them. It may not be practical for everyday, but you can do it a few days a week. This is an opportunity to talk to them about reducing pollution. It is also an excellent way to bond and get some exercise. Teach your kids about energy conservation. Talk to them about turning off light switches and other appliances when they leave a room. You can also have a family game night once a week, where rather than watch TV or go on the computer, the entire family unplugs and spends time together the old fashion way. Have your kids use less water. Show your kids what a gallon of water looks like. Explain to your children that when they leave the water on while brushing their teeth they waste about 150 gallons of water per month. Encourage them to shower instead of taking a bath. Baths typically use 50 gallons per bath, opposed to about 25 to 30 gallons if you take a 10-minute shower with a water saving shower head. Encourage your kids to select recycled school supplies. Many companies make notebooks, pencils and other supplies from recycled products. Point these products out when shopping for school supplies and make your child feel proud for choosing them over the flashier products. Encouraging your kids to reuse items is another excellent way of teaching them environmental responsibility. Show them how to make old things new with paint and fabric. Stress the importance of using both sides of a sheet of paper and also saving paper and supplies that can be reused. You can also create your own compost as a family. Encourage your children to separate trash from recycle items, trash items and items for compost. Later you can use the compost to plant a garden or another tree. There are many ways to teach your children about the environment and their individual responsibility to the environment. Living by example is the best way. If your children grow up in an environmentally friendly home and live that type of lifestyle from the beginning they will grow up more environmentally responsible themselves. That being said though it is never to late to start. |
