An Overview Of The Endangered Species List And How You Can Help
Just a few of the animals currently on the endangered species lists are: Atlantic Salmon: This great fish is known to be a symbol of healthy rivers and water systems throughout the world. To date, many of the original salmon runs are now extinct, or nearly extinct. However, although the numbers are declining at a rapid pace, these salmon can still be found in many parts of the world. Elephants: Elephants are the largest living land animals in the world. Poaching of these awesome animals has been in the news for decades, as the ivory trade grows stronger. Perhaps, more than all other land animals, elephants have the greatest affect on biodiversity. They are massive consumers whom create grazing fields for other animals in their paths. They also dig huge wells when in search of water, which is beneficial to virtually all other animals they share the land with. Great Apes: The biggest enemies of the great apes are currently the hunting that is taking place for the bush meat trade in Africa, and diseases such as Ebola. The Orangutan, Asia's only great ape is losing its habitat to deforestation and man-made plantations in the name of profit. Marine Turtles: Marine turtles have outlived nearly all of the recorded prehistoric animals of the past 200 million years. However, the habitat that once made them thrive is set to destroy them. Issues such as pollution, fisheries, hunting for shells and meat, boat strikes and habitat destruction has nearly wiped out the species. Pandas: Pandas are one of the most adored animals in the world. Unfortunately, they are also one of the most endangered species of the present day. Residing only in China, they face real threats of deforestation and poaching. In fact, today it is estimated that there are fewer than 1600 pandas remaining in the wild. Polar Bears: Climate change is the number one reason for the endangerment of the polar bear. Today, polar bears have a much more limited ice supply, which is where they hunt their prey. With a limited food supply, reproduction does not occur and the elimination of the species begins. According to scientists, polar bears could be extinct by the end of this century if nothing is done about the rapid climate changes. Rhinos: The rhino is one of the largest roaming mammals still left in existence today. However, it is facing extinction at a critical level. Like the elephant, the rhino plays a huge part in the ecosystem. They disperse seeds in their dung and shape the land they live in. Other animals on the list include snow leopards, tigers, dolphins and whales and monarch butterflies. You may be wondering what you can do to make a difference. The truth is that you can get involved in many ways. In fact, wildlife conservation begins with everyone. One thing that we can all do is to make environmentally conscious decisions in our everyday lives. Organic and "green" living is more popular than ever, and for good reasons. By watching what food you purchase at your local market, or what chemicals you decide to use in your garden or in your home, all will make a huge difference in the long run. You can also get involved with a national group like the WWF. By supporting such groups, you become one of the millions of people that are protecting the natural lands and animals of the world. If you are the adventurous type, you would probably find it very exhilarating and motivating to travel to less traveled habitats and see just what life on earth is about around the world. |
